About this product

This is a printable handwriting workbook designed for children aged 3 to 6, in preschool and kindergarten, who are learning to write their letters. You print a page. The child traces the dotted letters with a pencil, then writes them alone on the lines. US Letter and A4 are both included, each in color and in a low-ink black and white edition.

It is a printable, so a page can be printed again and again. A mistake never spoils the book, and a tricky letter can have as many goes as it needs.

How to use it

  1. Print one or two pages. One capital letter and its lowercase letter make a good sitting of five to ten minutes.
  2. The child traces the big letter with a finger. Numbers show which line comes first, arrows show which way to go, and a short phrase beside it says what to do ("Pull down. Slide right.").
  3. With a pencil, the child goes over the dotted letters, always starting at the green dot. Then they write the letter alone on the empty lines.

Page 4 shows one page filled in, so you can see what a finished page looks like before you start.

What is on each letter page

  • One big letter with numbered strokes, start points and arrows, and the words to say while writing it.
  • A row to trace, a row of "trace one, write one", and a row to write alone, on proper three-line handwriting guides (top line, dashed middle line, base line). Capital letters are 21 mm tall.
  • On each capital page: a bold outline picture to color, of a thing that starts with the letter (apple, ball, cat, dog ... zebra).
  • On each lowercase page: the word to trace (apple, ball, cat ...) and a "Find the letter" box, where the child circles the letter among others that look like it.

The letters to trace are made of clear black dots, not pale grey outlines, so a child can see exactly where the pencil goes. The letter style is standard US print, often called ball and stick.

What is inside (91 pages)

  • Start here and how to use it (2 pages): how many pages a day, which order, how to hold the pencil, how the three lines work.
  • A page filled in as an example.
  • 6 pencil control warm-ups: lines across, lines down and slanted lines, zigzags, waves and humps, circles and loops, shapes. Each one says which letters it leads to.
  • Letters A to Z, 52 pages: one page for each capital letter and one for each lowercase letter.
  • Numbers 0 to 10, 6 pages: a big number with stroke order, dots to count and color, a row to trace and a row to write.
  • First words, 15 pages: my name, 10 color words, the 7 days of the week, and 40 common sight words (I, a, the, and, is, it, in, to, we, me, my, go ...), each to trace and then write.
  • The whole alphabet to trace, capitals and lowercase (2 pages), and a page of empty handwriting lines to print whenever you need more.
  • A progress chart to color in and a certificate for finishing.
  • Two stroke order charts, capitals and lowercase, to keep beside you or put on the wall.
  • More notes for parents and teachers: what to do when a letter is hard, letters written the wrong way round, left-handed children, classroom use.

What you download

  • Color edition, US Letter (8.5 x 11 in).
  • Color edition, A4 (210 x 297 mm).
  • Low-ink edition, US Letter: black and white, no filled areas.
  • Low-ink edition, A4.

All four are PDF files with the same 91 pages. Open the one that matches your paper and your printer.

Good to know

  • Both paper sizes are in the download. You do not have to choose when you buy.
  • Print at 100% or "actual size", on one side of ordinary printer paper.
  • You can print any page as often as you like. To reuse a sheet, put it in a clear plastic sleeve and use a dry-erase marker.
  • The child-facing words use US spelling (color).
  • The low-ink edition photocopies cleanly. Its start dots are black, so its pages say "big dot" where the color edition says "green dot".
  • For your own children or your own class. Please do not share or resell the files.
  • This is practice material. It makes no promise about results at school. If the child's school teaches a different letter style, follow the school.
  • The 26 pictures were drawn with AI-assisted illustration tools, then cleaned, checked and chosen by HG Publishing. The letters and numbers are drawn from stroke data written for this workbook, not by an image tool.
  • This is a digital download. Nothing is posted to you, and you need a printer or a print shop.
