About this product

A complete first course in astrology for someone who knows nothing about it: get your birth chart free, draw it yourself one layer at a time, and learn to read every symbol on it.

A birth chart is a map of the sky for the minute and place you were born. It looks like a secret code: a circle cut into twelve slices, a dozen odd symbols, and lines across the middle. This book takes it apart and puts it back together in front of you. It starts with an empty circle and adds one thing at a time, and you build your own chart on paper as you go.

It assumes you know nothing. Every term is explained the first time it appears, every symbol is shown and named, and there is no mathematics.

What you will be able to do

  • Get an accurate birth chart for yourself or a friend from a free website in about five minutes, and know which lines of the result matter.
  • Name every symbol on a chart: the twelve signs, the ten planets and the five kinds of line.
  • Draw the chart yourself on a blank wheel.
  • Turn any placement into a plain sentence with three questions: what, how and where.
  • Read the lines between planets (aspects) and tell an easy one from a hard one.
  • Decide what matters most in a chart, so you are not drowned in detail.
  • Write a short reading of five sentences, and test each one against your own life.

How it works: one chart, seven layers

  1. The circle. The twelve signs: their symbols, the four elements and three modes that explain them, and a full page on each sign.
  2. The horizon. Your rising sign, and writing the signs on your wheel.
  3. The houses. Twelve parts of a life, a card for each, and a plain account of why your chart website numbers them differently.
  4. The lights. The Sun and the Moon, and the method the whole book rests on: every placement is a sentence.
  5. The planets. Mercury to Pluto, what the letter R means, and which planets are personal and which belong to a whole generation.
  6. The lines. The five aspects, a shortcut for spotting them, and how to find and read your own.
  7. The weight. Rulers, your chart ruler, what your chart has a lot of and what it lacks, and what stands out.

Each layer has the same three parts: the idea, then an invented example chart ("Nora") having that layer added and read, then your turn with a way to check you did it right.

What is inside

  • Step-by-step instructions for a free chart calculator (Cafe Astrology), followed on the live site on 13 October 2026, with a drawing of the form, the table it gives you, and exactly which twelve lines to copy.
  • 56 chart wheels, all drawn by computer from calculated planet positions, so the pictures and the text cannot disagree.
  • Three whole charts read from start to finish: one with a full birth time, one with no birth time at all, and one for a person born on the edge of two signs with a "difficult-looking" chart. Each person rejects at least one sentence of their reading, on purpose.
  • A page for each sign and each planet from the Sun to Saturn, with hand-colored constellation cards from 1825, engravings from 1539, and NASA photographs of the planets themselves.
  • What to do if you do not know your birth time. You can still do five of the seven layers, and the book shows how.
  • Where astrologers disagree, said plainly: tropical and sidereal zodiacs, house systems, traditional and modern rulers, and how wide an "orb" should be. The book says which choice it makes each time and why.
  • Six cheat sheets, a blank wheel, a glossary and picture sources at the back.

An honest note

This book treats a birth chart as a set of questions to think with. It does not predict anything. It includes a chapter on what happened when astrology was tested by scientists (it did not pass), three checks you can run on yourself, and a clear list of what a chart should not be used for. It makes no promises about health, money or relationships.

The three people in the worked examples are invented, and so are their birth dates.

It teaches modern Western astrology with the tropical zodiac and Whole Sign houses. It covers the birth chart only: no daily horoscopes, no compatibility readings, no forecasts.

Your files

  • Born Under This Sky (PDF, 103 pages, US Letter). The book, in color, with bookmarks and selectable text.
  • Workbook, US Letter (PDF, 12 pages). A page to write or draw on for every "Your turn": sky sheet, blank wheel, a second wheel for charts with no birth time, the elements tally, houses, ten sentences, aspects, the weight, and your reading, plus a spare sky sheet and wheel.
  • Workbook, A4 (PDF, 12 pages). The same pages sized for A4 paper.
  • Cheat sheets (PDF, 6 pages). The six reference pages from the back of the book on their own.
  • Everything in one ZIP.

Good to know

  • You need your date and place of birth, and your time of birth if you can find it. The book explains where to look.
  • You will use a free third-party website once to get your chart. It needs no account. Websites change; the book names two alternatives and tells you what any calculator must give you.
  • The workbook pages are for printing and writing on by hand, or for drawing on in a PDF app. They are not fill-in forms.
  • The book is US Letter size; on A4, print with "fit to page".
  • This is a digital download. Nothing is shipped.
