Ebook pricing: how to price an ebook and what you keep

By Bookstorez · Updated

Good ebook pricing starts from the result the book gives the reader, then adjusts for its length, how specialist the subject is and what the reader would otherwise spend to get the same answer. Pick a starting price, check what you keep after the fee, and test. This guide gives you a four-step framework, starting prices by type of book and a worked example of what each sale leaves you.

A simple framework for pricing an ebook

  1. Start from the result. Write down what the reader can do after reading: cook a week of dinners, pass an interview, fix a budget. The bigger and more specific that result, the more the book can ask.
  2. Adjust for the niche. A book for professionals, or on a narrow problem with few good answers, can carry a higher price than a general read. Readers pay more when the book is clearly about their exact situation.
  3. Adjust for length and depth. Length is a sign of depth, not a price by itself. A short book that solves one problem well can be worth more than a long one that wanders. Add worksheets, checklists or templates and the book does more work for the buyer.
  4. Check what you keep, then test. Work out what one sale leaves you, list the book, and change the price after you have seen how buyers respond.

How much should I charge for my ebook?

These are starting points to test, not what any book will sell for. Paid products on Bookstorez start at $3.

Type of ebookTypical shapeStarting price to test
Short guide or checklist10 to 25 pages, one problem$3 to $7
Practical ebook30 to 80 pages, a full how-to$7 to $15
In-depth or professional ebookSpecialist subject, worked examples$15 to $30
Ebook with workbook or templatesBook plus pages to fill in or reuse$12 to $25
Bundle of several ebooksTwo or more books on one themeLess than the books bought one by one

If you are unsure between two prices, start with the higher one. It is easier to run a coupon later than to raise a price buyers already know.

What you keep from each sale

On the Free plan the fee is 12% + 30¢ per sale, with card fees and tax handling included. Here is what that leaves you at a few prices:

PriceFee on FreeYou keep
$3$0.66$2.34
$7$1.14$5.86
$12$1.74$10.26
$20$2.70$17.30

Because part of the fee is fixed, the share you keep grows as the price rises. Try your own price in the fee calculator, which also shows the lower fee on Creator and Pro.

Signs your price needs another look

  • People visit the product page but nobody buys: show more sample pages first, then try a lower price.
  • Buyers say it was worth far more than they paid: try a higher price for new buyers.
  • Questions keep coming about what is inside: the page, not the price, may be the problem. Add the contents list and page count.

Ways to test without guessing

  • Change one thing at a time, and leave it long enough to see a pattern.
  • Run a coupon for a launch week instead of lowering the listed price.
  • Offer a bundle once you have two or three books, so a buyer can choose more for less each.
