How to sell digital products (without an audience yet)

By Bookstorez · Updated

Start with one useful download for one identifiable buyer. Make a small, finished product, show what is inside, price it with fees in mind and give people a clear reason to visit its page.

1. Choose a problem you can solve

Write down who the download is for, what they are trying to do and what they will have at the end. A weekly meal planner for a busy household is easier to explain than a collection of productivity pages. Use questions people have asked you as evidence of need; an idea alone is not evidence of demand.

2. Build and test the smallest useful version

Use a tool you already know. A guide needs accurate instructions; a worksheet needs enough space to write; a template needs clear editing directions. Export a PDF for a fixed layout or EPUB for reflowing text. Open the exported file on a phone and laptop. Print a sample if it is meant for paper. Check links, spelling, permissions and accessibility before uploading.

3. Show exactly what buyers receive

Give the product a descriptive title and a readable cover. Include real sample pages, dimensions, file format, page count and required software. Explain the intended result without promising income, grades or other outcomes you cannot guarantee. Make clear that it is a download, not a posted item. Browse ebooks and printables to see how downloads are presented.

4. Set a price and choose a sales channel

Compare the value of the task solved, the alternatives and your cost to support buyers. A low price can be expensive when every sale has a fixed fee. Start with a price you can explain and review actual sales and questions before making changes.

Compare the cost before you choose

For a $10 pre-tax sale by a US seller using a domestic card, Bookstorez Free leaves $8.50, Payhip Free with Stripe $8.91, Gumroad's standard direct tier $7.91, and Etsy $8.60 including one listing fee. Subscriptions, ads, refunds and tax are excluded. These are fee examples, not forecasts of demand. See the dated primary sources and assumptions or calculate your own price and volume.

Bookstorez is our own global digital marketplace. Free includes 3 live products, at 12% + 30¢ per sale with card fees and tax handling included. Buyers can browse the catalogue; no extra cut applies to marketplace sales. A catalogue place is not a promise of sales. Your own storefront and built-in AI ebook generator are included, with featured-product allowances on Creator and Pro. Compare creation tools, featured placements and plan limits.

5. Find the first buyers

A marketplace can make your work browsable; you still need to explain it. Share a useful example with people who need it, link from your own site and use relevant communities only where their rules allow promotion. Disclose that it is your product. Record visits, sales and the questions people ask. Improve an unclear page before making ten more products.

A worked product brief

Illustrative example: a four-page weekly meal planner. Show the weekly grid and shopping list, state that it is an A4 and US Letter printable PDF, and explain whether a licence allows personal or classroom use. At $10, the fee example above shows what remains before your own costs. This is an example, not a seller testimonial or a claim that it will sell.
